First, when you have MS, you can only deal with what is happening presently. Dealing effectively and productively with the problems or obstacles in the present prevents a building up of stress later on. Remain positive and don?t think things will continue to get worse.

Secondly, try to be with other people as much as possible. You don?t want to go through this alone. If you can?t leave your house, call a friend or family member to visit you so you don?t feel lonely and isolated. Because multiple sclerosis presents itself sometimes in very harsh and horrible ways while other times it is manageable, it is good to have people you can trust that will always be there for you when things get tough.

Thirdly, it is very important to stay positive. Write down your positive thoughts so that when you are feeling unhappy or miserable you can look back on them and remind yourself that you will soon feel better and that there is a reason to be happy. Your mind is very powerful and eventually what you think will become what you do.

Fourthly, try to be resourceful. When a problem or obstacle comes up, try to be creative and imaginative about its solution. Think about the easiest possible way to deal with something or to make it altogether disappear.

Fifthly, keep busy by finding a hobby. Often symptoms and dealing with the constant threat of your disease can be overwhelming. It is good to have something else to think about to escape sometimes. Take up baking or arts and crafts. You can go fishing or take up yoga. Try wine-tasting or go shopping with friends. Take a small trip to the beach or even to the park to have a picnic.

Sixthly, try not to think about yourself and your disease all the time. Try to get out of your mind and think about the good things in your life. Think about the people you love and all the fun times you have had in the past. Reconnect with old friends and think about fun and adventurous times you have had in your life.

Seventhly, stay in contact with your doctor. Make regular phone calls to your physician to find out about new symptom management tactics or new medications. Scientists are always working hard to find new ways to manage MS and it is important to stay on top of the new literature.

ahhh I loved those boys!

Many of you may know this already, I may have mentioned it once or twice (a frillion times) that I was a HUGE obsessive massive stalker fan of New Kids on the Block.

It all began in 1988 when I went to see a Tiffany concert and these five adorable boys came bouncing out on stage in their coordinating spandex outfits.

I fell in love with Joey, Jordan, Jonathan, Donnie and Danny that day. My love affair lasted for the next four years.

I was reunited with my true loves in 2008 when they came together after 20 years apart and started touring again.

I made some of my little girl dreams come true. I have met all of them multiple times. I have had front row tickets, including front row, dead center in Boston (where they are from). I have hung out for hours on end with one member who very much became a friend to me.

I learned a lot from these guys but what I didn?t learn was how to save my money! From early on the New Kids on the Block were a merchandising machine! I, like millions of other young girls, bought into it big time. I had walls covered in posters, t-shirts galore, every album they made in multiple copies and a ton of other items that had their faces on them. I happily forked over whatever money I could scrape together to buy the newest Big Bopper magazine or order a pay-per-view concert.

It wasn?t much different in 2008 when they reunited. Only now, as a grown woman, I had credit cards and no one to tell me ?no.? Instead of magazines I bought plane tickets. Instead of posters I bought Meet & Greet passes. I still bought t-shirts, although not as many. I still happily forked over thousands of dollars to my favorite band.

NKOTB may have been there for me in many ways as a teen and again when I was going through a divorce but what I didn?t get from them was the ability to manage my finances. I really wish their songs had different meanings, might I suggest some alternatives to their hits?

Hangin? Tough ? ?And if you try to keep us down, we?re going to come right back.? This one is actually pretty on target. While getting out of debt has been difficult this is exactly the way I?ve needed to be to stay on track. I have been kicked down but I?ve been working hard to ?come right back.?

I?ll Be Loving You for Ever ? ?I count the blessings that keep our love new. There?s one for me and a million for you.? It may not have been a million, more like fifteen thousand but there was a time when I was counting my blessings when there was a credit card to save the day.

Step By Step ? ?Step One, we can have lots of fun.? And fun I did have, unfortunately it was with my credit cards and not money I earned. ?Step two, there?s so much we can do.? Sometimes it felt like the sky was the limit. Fly to Boston for the weekend? Sure. Head over to Houston a few weeks later? Why the hell not? ?Step three, it?s just you and me.? Once I stopped using my credit cards and traveling, I seemed to lose a lot of friends. It was just me and my debt sitting at home. ?Step four, I can give you more.? Capital One has certainly always said that to me. ?Step five, don?t you know that the time has arrived.? Indeed, Jon it has arrived. The time for me to grow up and take control of my finances arrived more than 2 years ago and not a moment too soon. I?m proud of where I am and the strength it has taken to say ?no? to myself so many times.

One of the best days ever! The story behind this day would take thousands of words and I won't bore you with them but it was an amazing day! (That's me and one of the members, Jonathan Knight if you didn't know.)

Is Business Sustainability Moving Fast Enough? - Small Business ...

Last week, I wrote about how small businesses have been slower?overall than their larger counterparts to adopt green business practices for a variety of reasons. But there?s a larger, more worrisome concern: ?Many environmentalists and sustainable business advocates worry the overall charge toward eco-friendly business practices isn?t moving fast enough.

Even though many companies ? big and small ? have committed to reducing their energy use, recycling more, building sustainable supply chains and other very admirable goals, some experts say their strides aren?t ambitious enough to stem the major environmental problems, such as climate change, pollution and natural resource depletion, that they?re trying to solve. (Not to mention that some corporations are missing the sustainability goals they are setting for themselves.)

Meantime, signs of climate change are springing up everywhere, with this winter being among the warmest on record in several U.S. cities. Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise worldwide. Climate scientists say we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions at least 50% to stop the earth?s warming by 2050, but many companies set targets far less aggressive than that.

Green to Gold co-author Andrew Winston looked at this issue in a recent blog post, and suggested some ways to improve business sustainability leadership so that it better serves its mission of saving the planet. Here are some of his recommendations:

Push innovation to new levels. Companies need to aggressively scale up innovation and make sustainable design and use a core goal. This will help them look for ways to get customers to use less of their products, similar to Patagonia?s CommonThreads initiative.

Meet the challenge with resources. It?s important to devote enough time and money to big goals so you can realistically meet them. Too many companies set lofty goals but then don?t budget nearly enough to actually make them happen.

Don?t cave to investor pressure. Sustainability goals often don?t jibe with with the short-term profit expectations of investors. But companies can take steps to relieve this pressure on themselves. Some companies like Unilever and Google have changed this expectation by not providing earnings guidance to investors or becoming B-corps.

Dynamo Dresden is a soccer team in the second division (2. Bundesliga) in Germany. If we go back to the protest movement example, it seems like only those that ? after building the group based on fighting against something ? were able to create a positive target were here to stay for long.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? They've still got their trombones and their trumpets, their cornets and their clarinets.

But the high school marching bands of Southern California are tuba-less these days, and their music directors think they know why.

There's a banda bandit on the loose, they say. Someone, they believe, is breaking into high schools from the east side of Los Angeles to the shores of Manhattan Beach and stealing expensive tubas to supply a fast-growing black market for banda music.

Once little known north of Mexico, banda has become the fastest growing genre of Latino music in the United States over the past 20 years. It is particularly popular in Los Angeles, where musicians gather in places like Mariachi Plaza to offer their services to parties, weddings, quinceaneras and other events.

"Musically, it's appealing because it's so dynamic and colorful and bright," Josh Kun says of the fast-paced, joyous dance music that sprung from the polka tunes that German and French immigrants carried to the Mexican state of Sinaloa in the 19th century.

"Beyond a purely musical context," says the University of Southern California expert on cross-border popular culture, "it is attractive because it is also the musical context for Mexican immigrant life. ... It's about living between two worlds and sustaining your identity in that balance."

It also is all about the tuba, the most important instrument in the band.

Without a guy standing front and center blowing out those fast-paced "oompah, oompah, oompah" notes that only a tuba can make, a banda band is nothing.

"The band is driven by the tuba and the drummer," says Bill Roper, a professional tuba player. "The tuba serves the time function and the bass function, and the rest of the band can't exist without that."

Plus, the tuba is so big and pulsating that no one in the audience can ignore it, making it a very sexy instrument in its own right, says Roper. Indeed, people have been known to stuff money by the handful into the horn of a particularly talented tuba player.

So forget the trumpet player, the trombonist or the clarinetist. The tubist is to banda what the lead guitarist is to rock 'n' roll.

This is why some of the music teachers at the schools that have been hit say they believe banda bandits are responsible.

"I don't think anyone would go through all the trouble to break locks, break in and explicitly take tubas just to break them down," says Ruben Gonzalez, the music teacher at South Gate High School, which has lost five tubas. "They're worth a lot more money on the black market than they are if you melt them down. It's just a question of where are they selling them, here or out of state or in Mexico."

His school has been hit twice this year, once in October when thieves broke into the band room and took three tubas, then several weeks later, when they came back and grabbed two more. The school has only three left, leaving them with "more players than tubas," Gonzalez said.

"We have alarms, we have locks, but the second time, they just came in like gangbusters," he said. "All they took were tubas. Once they got in, they could have taken any instruments they wanted, but all they took were tubas."

In the modest Los Angeles suburb of Bell, where one in five people live in poverty, someone broke into the band room and took two tubas. They also ignored every other instrument there, said band director Ligia Chaves-Rasas.

At Huntington Park High School, two tubas have gone missing.

In affluent Manhattan Beach, someone made off with four tubas at Mira Costa High School, and in Compton, someone took eight tubas from Centennial High School.

Los Angeles Unified School District police did not return several recent calls, but Gonzalez said they have told him they were investigating. School police haven't said who they suspect.

Although players say cheap knockoffs are becoming more available from China, a good new brass tuba can cost $6,000 or more, and even a decent used one can fetch a couple thousand dollars.

"Everyone should get their horns insured," said Victor Mortson, who teaches brass at Riverside's Ramona High School, where some of the smaller sousaphone tubas vanished over the recent Christmas holiday. He said he no longer risks leaving his tuba in his car.

South Gate High officials pegged the loss of their five tubas at $30,000. They are trying to raise donations from the community to replace them.

The tubas favored by banda players are the lighter sousaphones, which marching band members carry. But in some instances, thieves have also been grabbing the heavier ones used by concert orchestras.

In their cases, those big tubas can weigh as much as 50 pounds, making them arguably the most difficult instruments to steal, after the piano and the bass drum.

But even before banda music's rise in popularity, tuba dealers say, the instrument's high cost has always made it vulnerable to theft.

Four years ago, somebody stole 14 sousaphones from North Carolina Central University's marching band, and the group had to borrow instruments to take part in a competition.

"They are instruments that are expensive and that are in demand," said USC's Kun. "In another context, it might be an electric guitar or a really tricked-out synthesizer. But because we're talking about Southern California, it's a tuba."

Judge stabbed, deputy shot at Washington state courthouse

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A knife-wielding attacker stabbed a judge and shot a sheriff's deputy with the officer's own gun in a county courthouse in Washington state on Friday, prompting a lockdown of schools and government buildings as police and SWAT teams searched for the attacker.

The assailant, described as relatively well dressed and carrying a briefcase, confronted the deputy inside the main entrance of the Grays Harbor County Courthouse in Montesano, County Undersheriff Rick Scott told a news conference.

The suspect stabbed the deputy, then grabbed her gun and shot her, Scott said.

The judge, who saw the commotion from the third floor of the courthouse and ran down to intervene, was stabbed in the neck and torso during the altercation, Scott said.

Both Superior Court Judge Dave Edwards and Deputy Polly Davin were taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital in nearby Aberdeen, where they were released after several hours of treatment, hospital spokesman David Quigg said.

Edwards, a former prosecuting attorney appointed to the bench in 2007, was part of a lawsuit filed by the Superior Court against the county in December that alleged poor courthouse security due to inadequate funding.

The lawsuit said that over the past two years, attorneys were physically assaulted at court, a defendant charged at a judge and a man came to the courthouse armed with a knife.

"Anyone can enter the courthouse carrying weapons," the lawsuit said of the courthouse.

Scott said the courthouse lacks metal detectors.

"We just had?a discussion about courthouse security less than a week ago," Scott said. "The need for that is certainly illustrated by what happened here today."

SUSPECT REMAINS AT LARGE

Authorities searched a wide area for the suspect, identified as Michael Thomas, but had not arrested him as of late afternoon.

Another man also identified as Michael Thomas was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant at mid-afternoon in the community of Tumwater, some 40 miles away, a spokeswoman for the Tumwater Police Department said.

Authorities later said he was not the gunman and only shared the same name as the suspect.

"The man in custody is not the alleged shooter," Scott said.

The gunman was described as being in his early 20s and possibly armed with a handgun and a knife. Scott said it was not clear what business he had at the courthouse.

A Grays Harbor County Sheriff's spokesman said that government buildings in Montesano, a community of about 4,000 people, had been temporarily placed on lockdown following the incident. A Montesano School District spokeswoman said schools had also been placed on lockdown.

Josh Bachtell, the owner of Savory Faire bakery in Montesano, said he had locked the doors of his business after the husband of one of his employees said he had seen a gunman running from the courthouse.

"Right after it happened, he came in and told us there was an armed gunman on the loose, so we've locked the doors," Bachtell said. "It looks like there's still a lot of police activity out there."

The courthouse assault came two days after a gunman fired a flurry of shots into the air and then traded gunfire with police outside a courthouse in Oklahoma on Wednesday, wounding a sheriff's deputy and a bystander, Tulsa authorities said.

It also followed a spate of recent high profile gun violence including a shooting at a psychiatric institute in Pittsburgh on Thursday in which a gunman shot dead one person before he was killed, and a shooting last week at an Ohio school in which three students died.
