Murphy gains votes to become Lowell's youngest mayor

LOWELL -- City Councilor Bill Martin broke his silence yesterday afternoon, telling The Sun he will vote for Councilor Patrick Murphy for mayor on Tuesday.

Murphy has already received commitments from Councilor Kevin Broderick and councilors-elect Vesna Nuon and Marty Lorrey. Those, coupled with his own and Martin's vote, give him the five votes required to be selected for the position.

"He is a young, energetic guy who will bring some new ideas and perspective to the mayor's position," Martin, a former mayor himself, said of Murphy. "He will do a good job for the city."

Murphy's rival was Councilor Rodney Elliott, 51, who won his eighth council term in November, finishing second to perennial ticket-topper Rita Mercier. He had secured mayoral votes from himself, Councilors Rita Mercier and Joe Mendonca and Councilor-elect Edward Kennedy.

Martin, the deciding vote in the mayoral race, said he spoke to Elliott to inform him of his intentions at about 4 p.m. yesterday.

"It's no surprise to me," Eliott said of Martin's announcement, adding he met with Martin two days after the election. "I ask the questions my constituents want asked, as evidenced by my second-place finish. I know the issues I raise make some of my colleagues uncomfortable, but I am not willing to compromise my positions on taxes and open and transparent government to become mayor.

"I do look forward to working with the new council in the next two years and continuing to do

the job the people elected me to do," he added.

Murphy, a 29-year-old stonemason who will begin his second council term Tuesday, will be the city's youngest mayor. That distinction had previously been held by Brian Martin, who was 33 when he became mayor in 1983.

"I am very honored to have the support and confidence of my colleagues old and new to lead our next City Council and School Committee," Murphy said. "And (I) look forward to working with and supporting, in turn, each of them as we seek to make our own contribution to the progress of this city."

In Lowell's Plan E form of government, while the mayoral position is largely ceremonial, he or she also is responsible for chairing the City Council and School Committee. The mayor will officially be chosen at Tuesday morning's inauguration, which begins at 10 a.m. at City Hall.

Moon countdown: Hours until 1st NASA probe arrives

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? NASA is counting down the seconds until its twin spacecraft bound for the moon make back-to-back arrivals over the New Year's weekend.

The washing machine-size probes have been cruising independently toward their destination since launching in September aboard the same rocket on a mission to measure lunar gravity.

Approaching the moon from the south pole, the Grail spacecraft ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? won't land on the surface, but will survey from orbit.

On New Year's Eve, Grail-A was poised to fire its engine for more than a half hour to slow itself and get captured into orbit. Grail-B will follow suit on New Year's Day.

Deep space antennas in the California desert and Madrid will track the tricky maneuvers and feed real-time updates to ground controllers.

"The anxiety level is heightened," project manager David Lehman of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory said earlier this week.

Grail is the 110th mission to target the moon since the dawn of the Space Age including the six Apollo moon landings that put 12 astronauts on the surface. Despite the attention the moon has received, scientists don't know everything about Earth's nearest neighbor.

Why the moon is ever so slightly lopsided with the far side more mountainous than the side that always faces Earth remains a mystery. A theory put forth earlier this year suggested that Earth once had two moons that collided early in the solar system's history, producing the hummocky region.

Grail is expected to help researchers better understand why the moon is asymmetrical and how it formed by mapping the uneven lunar gravity field that will indicate what's below the surface.

"It seems that the answer is not on the surface," said chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "We think that the answer is locked in the interior."

Previous lunar missions have attempted to study the moon's gravity ? which is about one-sixth Earth's pull ? with mixed results. Grail is the first mission devoted to this goal.

Once in orbit, the near-identical spacecraft will spend the next two months refining their positions until they are just 34 miles above the surface and flying in formation. Data collection will begin in March.

The $496 million mission will be closely watched by schoolchildren. An effort by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, will allow middle school students to use cameras aboard the probes to zoom in and pick out their favorite lunar spots to photograph.

Despite the latest focus on the moon, NASA won't be sending astronauts back anytime soon. The Obama administration last year nixed a lunar return in favor of landing humans on an asteroid and eventually Mars.

A jaunt to the moon ? about 250,000 miles away from Earth ? is usually speedy. It took the Apollo astronauts three days to zip there aboard the powerful Saturn V rocket. Since NASA wanted to economize by launching on a small rocket, it took Grail a leisurely 3 1/2 months to make the trip covering 2 1/2 million miles.

NASA's last moonshot occurred in 2009 with the launch of a pair of spacecraft ? one that circled the moon and another that deliberately crashed into the surface and uncovered frozen water in one of the permanently shadowed lunar craters.

Why 2012 could be the year we find a habitable planet

Other than the one we're currently living on, that is. As discoveries of alien planets accelerates, the discovery of an "alien Earth" could be just over the horizon.?

While 2011 was a huge year for alien-planet discoveries, 2012 could bring something even more exciting: the first true "alien Earth."

This year saw the tally of confirmed exoplanets top 700, with NASA's Kepler space telescope flagging thousands of additional candidates that still need to be verified. And just this month, Kepler scientists announced two landmark finds ? the?first two Earth-size alien planets, as well as a larger world in its star's habitable zone, that just-right range of distances where liquid water (and possibly life as we know it) could exist.

These and other recent discoveries suggest that the prized quarry of many exoplanet hunters ??an "alien Earth"?? could be just over the horizon. In fact, such a planet may well pop up in the next round of Kepler candidates, which should be released next year, researchers said.

"I'm guessing that this next planet catalog is going to see, finally, some numbers of points that are really, truly Earth-sized and in the habitable zone," said Natalie Batalha, deputy leader of the Kepler science team at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "That's something that I really look forward to, is getting those candidates." [Vote Now! Most Intriguing Alien Planets of 2011]

The year has seen a huge increase in the?number of known exoplanets. At the start of 2011, astronomers had confirmed 528 alien worlds, according to the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia, a database compiled by astrobiologist Jean Schneider of the Paris-Meudon Observatory.

Less than one year later ? and just 16 years after the first alien planet was found orbiting a sun-like star ? the count now stands at 713. And thousands more are waiting in the wings.

On Dec. 5, Kepler scientists announced the discovery of?1,094 new exoplanet candidates, bringing the mission's total tally in its first 16 months of operation to 2,326. So far, just 33 of these potential planets have been confirmed by follow-up observations, but researchers have estimated that at least 80 percent of them will turn out to be the real deal.

These huge numbers are exciting by themselves, but the search for alien planets isn't really about increasing the tally. Rather, it's a quest to better understand the nature and?diversity of alien worlds, researchers say.

"You can only understand the diversity of systems if you have enough numbers that speak to the statistics," Batalha told SPACE.com. "You really want a large sample, and that's where Kepler's going to make a huge contribution."

The diversity of alien worlds and systems appears to be high. Astronomers have found one planet as light and airy as Styrofoam, for example, and another as dense as iron. And in September, the Kepler team announced the discovery of an?alien planet that circles two suns, like Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine in the "Star Wars" films.

Cops: Mom, son rescued after Facebook post

A Utah woman used Facebook to seek help after she and her 17-month-old son were held hostage at a residence for nearly five days, police said.

Police Sgt. Jon Arnold said the woman hid in a closet with a laptop to post her plea for help on the social networking website, saying she and her son would be "dead by morning" if they were not rescued.

The post prompted someone to call police, who went to the home to check on the woman's welfare.

"Facebook was her only outlet that she had at the home," Arnold said. "It just happened that she was able to use it."

Police arrested Troy Reed Critchfield, 33, and booked him into jail Saturday for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty and other charges.

Salt Lake County Jail records show Critchfield initially refused to let police in the house.

The papers say the woman shook her head to indicate "No," when officers asked if she was OK.

After police separated the couple, the woman told officers she and her child had not been allowed to leave the home and that she repeatedly had been hit, choked and sexually abused over a period of nearly five days. Jail records show the woman also claimed Critchfield had taken her cell phone and the phone of a disabled child also in the home.

"She claims that any time she went to go to a door, he physically assaulted her," Arnold told The Associated Press on Monday.

Story: Man jailed after Facebooking a store burglary

The woman had bruises and other physical injuries consistent with allegations, but refused to go to a hospital for treatment, he said.

She also told officers that Critchfield grabbed the boy's arms and treated him roughly, while also refusing to let her feed the family dog, jail papers state.

Critchfield remained in jail on Monday. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

Utah State Court records show that in December 2010 Critchfield pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault and obstruction of justice charges in connection with a domestic violence incident.

A judge sentenced Critchfield to a prison term of five years, but suspended the punishment for a 120-day jail term and three years of probation.

NBA roundup: Marvin Williams has 14 as Hawks ruin Nets final NJ opener

NEWARK, N.J. ? Marvin Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds and the Atlanta Hawks opened a double-digit lead early and cruised to a victory over the sluggish Nets in their final home opener in New Jersey.

Jeff Teague added 13 points, Joe Johnson had 11 and the Hawks got big games off the bench from Zaza Pachulia (13 points and 11 rebounds) and Vladimir Radmanovic (17 points) in finally opening the lockout-delayed season by embarrassing the Nets in a game in which the crowd was booing the Brooklyn-bound team by halftime.

Rookie MarShon Brooks had 17 points to lead the cold-shooting Nets, who looked tired coming off a season-opening win in Washington on Monday night.

LAKERS 96, JAZZ 71

LOS ANGELES ? Kobe Bryant scored 26 points, Pau Gasol added 22 points and nine rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers avoided just the fourth 0-3 start in franchise history with a 96-71 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night.

Metta World Peace scored 14 points for the Lakers, who had much more life than the Jazz despite playing their third game in three nights to open the season.

Los Angeles ran away with a dominant third quarter, making a 27-8 surge out of halftime in the club?s first win for new coach Mike Brown.

Paul Millsap had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Utah, the last NBA team to open its regular season. Coach Tyrone Corbin scowled throughout the lowest-scoring performance in an opener in franchise history.

BUCKS 98, TIMBERWOLVES 95

MILWAUKEE ? Rookie Jon Leuer converted a three-point play with 1:17 left, helping the Bucks hold off Minnesota in their home opener.

Brandon Jennings scored 24 points and Stephen Jackson added 16 for the Bucks, who were playing without forward Drew Gooden because of a suspension and several other key players because of injuries.

Kevin Love had 31 points and 20 rebounds for the Timberwolves, whose late rally came up just short.

Minnesota was without coach Rick Adelman, who was attending funeral services for his mother-in-law. Assistant Terry Porter, a former head coach in Milwaukee, filled in for Adelman.

Baylor still No. 1 in AP women's basketball poll

Baylor is still the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in The Associated Press women's college basketball poll as the first five teams remained unchanged.

The Lady Bears received all 40 first-place votes Monday for the fourth straight week after blowing out McNeese State in its only game. UConn remains second, with Notre Dame, Stanford and Maryland following.

Kentucky, Tennessee, Duke, Ohio State and Texas A&M round out the Top 10. There was little movement in the poll as most teams had a light schedule for the holidays.

Miami had the biggest fall, dropping five places to No. 12 after a 25-point loss at then-No. 17 Georgetown on Wednesday. The Hoyas moved up two spots to 15th.

Snoop, Khalifa look to be next Cheech and Chong (AP)

ATLANTA ? Snoop Dogg remembered watching all of the Cheech and Chong movies growing up, idolizing the pothead tandem's ability to always escape from danger in their comedy films.

Wiz Khalifa revered Snoop Dogg for his weed-smoking, ultra-smooth West Coast swagger shown extensively throughout his rap career.

One is the mentor, the other is the protege. Since the two rappers met for the first time last year, they've built a strong rapport with each other and have united to create their own album, "Mac & Devin Go to High School," which was released this week.

The album is the soundtrack of the rappers' upcoming stoner comedy, "Mac & Devin Go to High School," which is expected to be released early next year. The duo feels they are capable of following the footsteps of Cheech and Chong, who gained fame through their marijuana humor.

"They smoked joints, they were funny, they were cool and they would get into real situations," Snoop Dogg said. "To me, that's what me and Wiz represent. A lot of kids growing up don't understand who Cheech and Chong are. So we're the modern-day image of them. We're bringing it back."

Snoop Dogg and Khalifa have embodied the fun-filled, carefree life, with a devotion to smoking marijuana. Their easygoing demeanor is displayed on the duo's single, "Young, Wild & Free," featuring Bruno Mars, which peaked at No. 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

The rappers are latest popular hip-hop characters to create an album and movie revolved around their pothead excursions. Rapper Redman and Method Man appeared in the 2001 film, "How High."

But Khalifa said he and Snoop Dogg are ""trying to create our own lane.

"There have been others to pave the way for us, so we're just trying to keep it going, and tell our own stories," added Khalifa, who finished a six-city tour with Snoop Dogg this week.

Some believe the rappers are having too much fun with their storytelling. In May, there were reports that school officials canceled the filming of "High School" at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif., after learning the theme of the movie was centered around marijuana, which is an illegal substance.

When contacted by The Associated Press, school officials declined to comment.

But Snoop Dogg and Khalifa ? who both stand at a lanky 6-foot-4 ? coolly denied there were any problems.

"We heard about it, but it didn't mean much to us," Snoop Dogg said. "We got done what we needed to get done. It was shot and promptly prepared."

Snoop Dogg, 40, took a liking to the 24-year-old Khalifa after he noticed his kids' infatuation with the Pittsburgh-bred rapper's ubiquitous 2010 hit "Black and Yellow." From there, Snoop Dogg invited Khalifa to his home in Los Angeles.

"We have built a bond and a friendship that's going to last a lifetime," Khalifa said. "People will hear it in the music, and see it in the movie."

After a conversation that lasted a few hours, the two rappers decided that same day to collaborate for an album and movie. They didn't waste time, filming the movie and recording the album within a two-month timeframe.

In "High School," Khalifa stars as a senior valedictorian named Devin who is only focused on his academics. He breaks out of his shell after meeting Snoop Dogg's character, Mac, a teenage student (yes, he is playing a teen) who has street smarts but struggles to apply them in the classroom.

Snoop Dogg described his partnership with Khalifa as "a magical situation."

"I've been around magic a lot of times from being with Dr. Dre, Tupac, Master P. and Nate Dogg. What me and Wiz had was a magical moment right there."

Fitch: comprehensive euro zone deal "beyond reach" (Reuters)

ROME/BERLIN (Reuters) ? The credit rating agency Fitch has told euro zone countries it believes a comprehensive solution to their debt crisis is beyond reach, putting six euro zone economies including Italy on watch for potential downgrades in the near future.

It reaffirmed France's top-notch triple-A rating but even here said the outlook was now negative, meaning it could be downgraded within two years.

Underscoring the tensions within the bloc over a crisis that has spread relentlessly over the past two years, Italy's prime minister urged European policymakers on Friday to beware of dividing the continent with efforts to fight its debt crisis.

In a swipe at Germany, he warned against a "short-term hunger for rigor" in some countries.

Germany has led resistance to allowing the European Central Bank to ramp up its buying of government bonds on the open market to a big enough scale to douse the crisis, but Fitch late on Friday added to the pressure for just such a move.

It said that, following the EU summit a week ago, it had concluded that "a 'comprehensive solution' to the euro zone crisis is technically and politically beyond reach."

"Of particular concern is the absence of a credible financial backstop," it said. "In Fitch's opinion this requires more active and explicit commitment from the ECB to mitigate the risk of self-fulfilling liquidity crises for potentially illiquid but solvent Euro Area Member States."

It put Belgium, Spain, Slovenia, Italy, Ireland, and Cyprus on negative watch, which could mean a downgrade within three months.

Later another agency, Moody's, cut Belgium's credit rating by two notches, saying the euro zone debt crisis raised funding risks for countries with high public debt burdens, and said a further downgrade was possible within two years.

Standard & Poor's had already warned 15 of the currency bloc's 17 members they were close to a downgrade.

"The systemic nature of the euro zone crisis is having a profoundly adverse effect on economic and financial stability across the region," Fitch said.

The euro edged higher against the dollar but still suffered its worst weekly performance against the greenback in three months.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel gained some respite from domestic pressure to take a tougher line in the crisis when eurosceptics in her junior coalition partner, the Free Democrats, lost a grassroots party referendum aimed at blocking a permanent euro zone rescue fund.

A victory for the eurosceptics could have brought down Merkel's centre-right coalition, but the outcome still left the FDP split, with its public support in tatters.

Meanwhile, a first draft of a planned fiscal compact among euro zone countries and aspiring members, published on Friday, showed that countries could be taken to the European Court of Justice if they did not meet agreed budget goals.

AUTOMATIC SANCTIONS

Merkel - under pressure from the revered Bundesbank to force debt-saddled euro zone countries to reform and save their way out of crisis with austerity measures - has led a push for automatic sanctions for deficit "sinners" in the bloc.

This has fed concerns that excessive belt-tightening in southern countries could send their economies into a negative spiral with no prospect of growing out of crisis, while feeding resentment in the prosperous north.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said Europe's response "should be wrapped in a long-term sustainable approach, not just to feed short-term hunger for rigor in some countries."

"To help European construction evolve in a way that unites, not divides, we cannot afford that the crisis in the euro zone brings us ... the risk of conflicts between the virtuous North and an allegedly vicious South," he told a conference in Rome.

French officials have sought to prepare the public for the likelihood that Paris will lose its top-notch rating from S&P for the first time since 1975, playing down the potential setback and focusing attention instead on neighboring Britain. President Nicolas Sarkozy had vowed to keep the top rating, and it could become an issue in next year's election campaign.

"The economic situation in Britain today is very worrying, and you'd rather be French than British in economic terms," Finance Minister Francois Baroin said in a radio interview, a day after Bank of France Governor Christian Noyer said that if ratings agencies were even-handed, Britain deserved to be downgraded before France.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said French Prime Minister Francois Fillon had called him to explain that "it had not been his intention to call into question the UK's rating but to highlight that ratings agencies appeared more focused on economic governance than deficit levels."

Clegg's office said he accepted the explanation "but made the point that recent remarks from members of the French government about the UK economy were simply unacceptable and that steps should be taken to calm the rhetoric."

World Bank President Robert Zoellick said he was "deeply troubled" by the exchanges.

He said politicians needed to be careful because "you've got a tinderbox out there in both political and economic terms."

Euro zone officials said potential downgrades, particularly from S&P, could raise the cost of borrowing for the region's existing EFSF bailout fund, but would not make a big difference to its operations.

EFSF FIREPOWER

EFSF chief Klaus Regling told the Rome conference about 600 billion euros was available to fight the crisis.

"If Italy and Spain were to ask for support, their gross financing needs for 2012 are less than that and I don't think they would need to be taken off the market," he said.

The EFSF has the option of providing first-loss insurance on new bond issues, but the country concerned would have to make a formal request and negotiate conditionality, while the sum guaranteed would have to be agreed unanimously by EFSF members, subject to German parliamentary approval.

Euro zone countries will hold talks next Monday on the draft text of the euro zone fiscal compact and on bilateral loans to the International Monetary Fund, officials in Brussels said.

Slovak Finance Minister Ivan Miklos told Reuters they would commit 150 billion euros to boost the IMF's lending capacity.

The United States has refused to offer additional funding and it remains to be seen how much countries such as China, Russia, Brazil and India are willing to commit.

The European Central Bank has resisted calls for unlimited purchases of euro zone sovereign bonds to quell the debt crisis, putting the onus on governments and their collective financial firewalls.

ECB President Mario Draghi said on Thursday that euro zone governments were on track to restore market confidence and the ECB's bond-buying plan was "neither eternal nor infinite."

But in one intriguing hint on Friday, Bank of Italy governor Ignazio Visco told the Rome conference: "The impression is that there is only one way to convince markets, and we'll work on that." He did not elaborate.

Banks appear to be resisting pressure from governments to help debt-choked euro zone countries by using cheap money lent by the ECB to buy more sovereign bonds.

The chief executive of UniCredit, one of Italy's two biggest banks, said this week that using ECB money to buy government debt "wouldn't be logical."

Euro zone governments need to sell almost 80 billion euros of fresh debt in January alone, and the stand-off between policymakers and banks could turn the slow-burning debt crisis into a conflagration in the New Year.

In Greece, where the debt crisis began two years ago, a senior official of the EU/IMF troika team negotiating terms for a second bailout package said there was no guarantee that talks on the private sector's contribution would lead to a voluntary deal involving the bulk of its creditors.

Agreement has been held up by wrangling over issues ranging from the credit status and interest coupons on the new bonds to legal guarantees to be offered by the official sector. One key question is how many sign up to a private sector debt swap.

Failure to secure agreement could force a disorderly default that might trigger a wider emergency across the euro zone.

Asked if there was a risk of a disorderly Greek default, the troika official said: "Our objective is still to have a voluntary operation. If you ask me 'Is there a guarantee that there will be a voluntary operation?', of course there can never be a guarantee."

What Your Insurance Adjuster Wishes You Knew | Madame Noire ...

If you?ve ever filed an insurance claim, you?ve dealt with an insurance adjuster. The adjuster?s job is to review the claim, determine whether it?s payable under the terms of your policy and determine how much the company should pay you for your loss. Unlike agents, adjusters deal with policyholders at their worst. After a claim, you may be feeling stressed or upset about your property. Sometimes it?s hard to work with the adjuster. However, if you knew what he knew, it might be easier to get your claim settled and your check cut.

The More You Cooperate, the Faster It Goes
It may seem like your insurance adjuster is the enemy but he?s not. In fact, he?s the one who gets you your check. So if he asks for something?documentation of the loss or to come inspect the claim site?let him. As soon as he gets the information he needs, he can make a decision and cut the check.Your Policy is Supposed to Indemnify You
You can?t profit from an insurance claim. Instead, the policy is meant to indemnify you. Indemnification is the act of putting you back into a similar or equal position as you were in before your loss. So when your adjuster is looking at a ten year old car as a total loss, he can?t pay you for the cost of a brand new one. You?re going to get the value of your ten year old car instead.

Your Neighbors Will Tell On You
And so will your passengers, your family and your coworkers. Depending on the nature of the policy and your claim, your insurance adjuster has to take a statement from any witnesses or anyone with relevant information. In most cases, insurance fraud is caught when someone close to the insured. Most people don?t want to lie under oath in a deposition or get mixed up in some crazy insurance fraud scheme.

Yelling Will Get You Nowhere
We?ve all lost our cool during a stressful situation and said something we shouldn?t have to someone just doing his job. Remember that just as you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar, you can get more done by speaking calmly and rationally than screaming. If you need to take a moment to collect yourself, do so. And, if you find yourself saying something you wish you could take back, just come back with an apology and start over.

Newt and Mitt assailed in Iowa (Politico)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? It was back to the ?90s on the stage here Thursday night, as Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney battled decades-old attacks on their conservative credentials and business records in the final debate before the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Under harsh attacks from their underdog opponents and persistent scrutiny from the Fox News debate moderators, the two Republican front-runners both tried to avoid an 11th-hour stumble.

Gingrich attacked on Freddie

Gingrich appeared to get the rougher end of the bargain, finding himself on the defensive from the very first question.

The former House speaker vehemently denied charges that he made a fortune in the influence business, betrayed conservatives as a leader in Congress and lacks the temperament to be president.

Under assault from multiple opponents over his work as a consultant for the troubled lender Freddie Mac, Gingrich declared that money had not influenced his political views.

?I have never once changed my positions because of any kind of payment,? Gingrich said, brushing aside the barb. ?I was a national figure who was doing just fine doing a whole variety of things, including writing bestselling books.?

Accused by both Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann of being unfriendly to core conservative voters, Gingrich urged voters to look at his record.

?I think on the conservative thing, it?s sort of laughable to suggest that somebody who campaigned with Ronald Reagan and with Jack Kemp and has had a 30-year record of conservatism is somehow not a conservative,? Gingrich said.

Attacked for having once suggested he?d support Republicans who support some abortion rights, Gingrich shot back: ?I said I wasn?t gonna go out and purge Republicans.?

Romney, too, struggled to fight off charges of ideological insincerity, taking issue with Fox host Chris Wallace when he suggested that Romney had shifted positions on gay rights and gun-related issues since running for Senate against Ted Kennedy 17 years ago.

?I do not believe in discriminating against people based on their sexual orientation,? Romney said. ?In 1994 and throughout my career, I?ve said I oppose same-sex marriage.?

Romney acknowledged, as he has before, that his position on abortion changed over time.

He also addressed the attack ? leveled by both Gingrich and the Democrats ? that as a private equity executive he was responsible for laying off thousands of American workers.

?In the real world, some things don?t make it, and I believe I?ve learned from my successes and my failures,? Romney said. ?We did our very best to make those businesses succeed. I?m pleased that they did.?

Gingrich and Romney didn?t direct attacks at each other. But Bachmann, Santorum and Ron Paul were more than happy to do the honors.

More often than not, they aimed at Gingrich.

Twitter Mishap: Charlie Sheen's Number Goes Public Because of Justin Bieber

The year is about to end and for Charlie Sheen, what best way to celebrate it by announcing his number on Twitter?

Well, the actor did not exactly publicly post his personal number for his fans. It was simply a "slip-of-the-fingers" moment when Sheen accidentally tweeted his digits along with a message supposedly for the teen heartthrob Justin Bieber.

"310 954 7277. Call me bro. C," tweeted the former star of the show Two and a Half Men. The tweet was supposed to be a direct message to the Mistletoe singer Justin Bieber but instead it became a worldwide trending Twitter feed.

Fans immediately took the spur of the moment chance and sent messages to Sheen's number. In just a matter of minutes, Sheen's mobile phone received around 1800 text messages and a lot of calls. If that didn't fry his phone, what else would?

Like us on Facebook

"Charlie's phone immediately went into meltdown," says a source to The Hollywood Reporter. "It was ringing wildly, and he got 1,800 text messages in minutes."

However, being the joker that he is, Sheen even answered a few of the calls saying "Winning " and "Ray's Pizza."

"But his phone just continued ringing and buzzing and eventually just completely melted down. Charlie was like, 'I guess I need a new phone," says the source. Sheen was currently at the Caesar's Palace restaurant at Las Vegas dining with his close friends when the calls and texts started to come in.

Thankfully, Charlie Sheen finally decided to get a new phone plan and the number he accidentally tweeted has been disconnected. As for his supposed contact, Justin Bieber, he has yet to contact Charlie Sheen and the singer had only one response to the mishap on Twitter.

"WINNING!" replied the Bieber to Sheen's Twitter mishap.

If Charlie Sheen was able to attract that much of attention on Twitter, wonder how much calls and texts the Bieber would get if he "accidentally" tweeted his digits?

VLT Survey Telescope snaps wide-field view of NGC 253

The VLT Survey Telescope (VST) has captured the beauty of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 253. The new portrait is probably the most detailed wide-field view of this object and its surroundings ever taken. It demonstrates that the VST, the newest telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory, provides broad views of the sky while also offering impressive image sharpness.

NGC 253 gleams about eleven and a half million light-years away in the southern constellation of Sculptor. It is often just called the Sculptor Galaxy, although other descriptive names include the Silver Coin or Silver Dollar Galaxy. It is easy to get a good look at NGC 253 through binoculars as it is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky after the Milky Way's closest, big galactic neighbour, the Andromeda Galaxy.

Astronomers have noted the widespread active star formation in NGC 253 and labelled it a "starburst" galaxy [1]. The many bright clumps dotting the galaxy are stellar nurseries where hot young stars have just ignited. The radiation streaming from these giant blue-white babies makes the surrounding hydrogen gas clouds glow brightly (green in this image).

This nearby spiral galaxy was discovered by the GermanBritish astronomer Caroline Herschel, the sister of the famed astronomer William Herschel, as she searched for comets in 1783. The Herschels would have been delighted by the crisp, richly detailed view of NGC 253 that the VST can provide.

This latest image of NGC 253 was taken during VST's science verification phase when the telescope's scientific performance is assessed before it enters operations. The VST data are being combined with infrared images from VISTA (eso0949 http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0949/) to identify the younger generations of stars in NGC 253. This picture is more than 12 000 pixels across and the superb sky conditions at ESO's Paranal Observatory, combined with the fine telescope optics, result in sharp star images over the entire image.

The VST is a 2.6-metre wide-field survey telescope with a one-degree field of view twice as broad as the full Moon [2]. The VST programme is a joint venture between the INAFOsservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy and ESO (eso1119 http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso1119/). The 268-megapixel camera OmegaCAM at its heart is designed to map the sky both quickly and with very fine image quality. VST is the largest telescope in the world designed to exclusively survey the sky in visible light, complementing ESO's VISTA infrared survey telescope, also located at Paranal.

Zooming into this new picture not only allows a very detailed inspection of the star-forming spiral arms of the galaxy to be made, but also reveals a very rich tapestry of much more distant galaxies far beyond NGC 253.

[1] Further details about NGC 253 have been revealed by ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) along with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. These instruments showed in 2009 that, at its centre, NGC 253 harbours a supermassive black hole with very similar properties to those of the black hole lurking in the Milky Way's core (see ESO Press Release eso0902 http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0902/).

Prosecutor injured in Minn. courthouse shooting (AP)

GRAND MARAIS, Minn. ? A gunman opened fire in a small northern Minnesota courthouse on Thursday, wounding the local prosecutor and two other people, authorities said.

The shootings began around 4 p.m. at the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais, a remote town near the Canadian border, and a suspect was quickly taken into custody, State Public Safety spokesman Doug Neville said. The agency later identified the suspect as 42-year-old Daniel Schlienz, who had been on trial earlier Thursday on sexual misconduct charges. Schlienz was being held in the county jail.

Cook County prosecutor Timothy Scannell was undergoing surgery for multiple gunshot wounds Thursday night at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, spokeswoman Beth Johnson said. Scannell and another hospitalized victim were conscious and talking before being taken to the hospital, while the third victim was treated and released, Neville said.

A county official said the courthouse doesn't have metal detectors and visitors aren't usually searched.

Scannell was handling the only case on Thursday's court calendar, a jury trial that began Monday for Schlienz, who had been charged with criminal sexual conduct and nonconsensual sex contact.

Schlienz's father told the Duluth News Tribune that he went to the courthouse and was told that his son was the shooter. He said his son had recently threatened suicide.

"He hated the prosecuting attorney that did this," Gary Schlienz told the newspaper. "I don't want to make excuses for him, but they prosecuted him pretty bad. He had no job, no money, nothing."

Phone messages left at both of the men's homes by The Associated Press were not returned.

Online state court records listed several cases involving Daniel Schlienz in the past two decades, but most were minor traffic cases. More serious charges included fleeing a peace officer and the criminal sexual conduct case, which was first filed in 2006.

The Duluth News Tribune reported that Schlienz had entered an Alford plea in that case in 2007 on charges that he sexually assaulted two 15-year-old girls and one 17-year-old girl. His father told the newspaper that his son later decided to withdraw the plea and fight the charges.

The county's two-story courthouse, which has just one courtroom, has no metal detectors and visitors aren't searched when they enter the building, Cook County Commissioner Fritz Sobanja said.

"As far as I know, there's no checking for knives or any of that stuff," Sobanja said.

Grand Marais, home to about 1,300 residents, is about 110 miles northeast of Duluth and sits along the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota's far northeastern tip.
